Sophia Bennett was killed in the two-car crash on Friday, March 22, at the intersection of Hurffville Road and Deptford Center Road just after 8 p.m., according to police and school officials.
The vehicle that Sophia was riding in was being driven by a 17-year-old Gibbstown boy, who was seriously injured, police said at the time of the crash. The other driver, a 27-year-old woman from Deptford, was taken to Jefferson Hospital (Washington Township), police said.
Sophia was a sophomore at Washington Township High School where she played softball and was a swimmer, according to a Facebook post by WTHS Project Graduation.
"Sophia was not just a student," the post reads. "She was a vibrant member of our community, a swimmer, and a member of our softball program. Her warmth, kindness, and spirit touched the lives of many, and her presence will be deeply missed by students, teachers, staff, and all who knew her."
The township penned a tribute of its own:
Grief counseling is being made available to students.
In nearby Gloucester City, the community was mourning the loss of Gage Myers, 18, a former baseball player killed in a crash on I-95 in Maryland on Saturday, March 23. His 19-year-old girlfriend Rylee McNee was seriously injured.
